Iraq wants to have security control of all provinces by year-end

DIWANIYA, IRAQ Iraq hopes to have control over security across the country by the end of the year, national security advisor Mowaffak Rubaie said Wednesday, as U.S.-led forces handed over responsibility for the southern province of Qadisiya to local authorities. (article 7) BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) At least 15 people were killed and 90 wounded Wednesday when a car bomb exploded in a popular outdoor market in northern Iraq, a police official said. (article 2) The bomb, which went off around 7 p.m. in the al-Talia neighborhood of Tal Afar, appeared to target civilians at the market, the official said. (article 2) The attack followed several bombings on Tuesday which killed around 40 people in northern areas, where al Qaeda militants are still feared despite a series of military offensives. (article 5) The attack targeted afternoon shoppers in the town, about 420km (260 miles) north-west of the capital, Baghdad. (article 1) Violence also flared in the northern city of Mosul, where a dozen people died in bombings that targeted the Iraqi police and army. (article 3) At least 28 Iraqi security force recruits were killed on Tuesday in two suicide bombings in Diyala province north of Baghdad, where the government has said it plans a military offensive against insurgent groups.
