US envoy to attend Iran-EU nuclear talks
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
TEHRAN, Iran - A two-day Iranian show of force through the launching of medium- and long-range test missiles was meant to strike fear in the hearts of the country's rivals. (article 10) Senior U.S. officials tell ABC News that no decision has yet been made on whether to open the first American diplomatic post in Iran in almost 30 years - despite a British newspaper report to the contrary. (article 3) Such a decision would put American officials in Iran for the first time since 52 diplomats were held hostage for 444 days from 1979 to 1981. (article 3) Determined to show Washington's beef is with Iran's government and not its people, the State Department has stepped up efforts in recent years to bring in hundreds of artists, athletes and medical staff from Iran on exchange programs. (article 1) In a front-page report, the Guardian said Washington would open a U.S. interests section in the Iranian capital, halfway towards opening an embassy. (article 2) William Burns will attend talks with the Iranian envoy , Saeed Jalili, in Switzerland on Saturday. (article 6) The talks are aimed at persuading Iran to halt activities that could lead to the development of atomic weapons, a senior U.S. official told the Associated Press yesterday. (article 6)
