Tomatoes are safe to eat again despite salmonella outbreak
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Tomato farmers, packers and distributors made the request to the Food and Drug Administration last week, a month after the agency first told consumers to avoid eating certain tomatoes from suspected regions, later identified as parts of Florida and Mexico. (article 5) WASHINGTON - It's OK to eat all kinds of tomatoes again, the U.S. government declared Thursday - lifting its salmonella warning amid signs the record outbreak, while not over, finally may be slowing. (article 3) Investigators still don't know what caused the salmonella outbreak, which now has sickened 1,220 people in 42 states und the earliest falling ill on April 10 and the latest so far on July 4. (article 1) But Thursday's move, coming as the tomato industry estimates its losses at more than $100 million, doesn't mean that tomatoes harvested in the spring are cleared. (article 1) Virginia's East Coast Brokers, one of the largest tomato growers in the country, has been hammered by slumping demand and falling prices, although Virginia tomatoes were cleared early on, said sales manager Batista Madonia III. (article 8) Consumers got the go-ahead this afternoon to eat tomatoes again, following months of concern that the produce was linked to more than 1,000 cases of salmonella. (article 4)
