Pope apologizes for church abuse in Australia
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Pope John Paul II led the world's Roman Catholics since he was the surprise choice of the College of Cardinals on Oct. 16, 1978. (article 16) Support groups for victims of church abuse in Australia, whose numbers are not known but who activists say are in the thousands, had demanded the pope make a full and open apology for clergy abuse and do more to prevent future abuse. (article 11) The pontiff is in Australia to lead hundreds of thousands of pilgrims in the church's World Youth Day, a celebration meant to inspire a new generation of Catholics. (article 11) The pope, making some of his most explicit comments on the sexual abuse scandal that has rocked the Church in several countries, also said unequivocally that those responsible should be brought to justice. (article 3) Benedict then traveled by popemobile to the Randwick Jockey Club track where up to 300,000 pilgrims had gathered to hear the 81-year-old pontiff conduct mass to end World Youth Day, the Catholic Church's biggest youth festival. (article 6) Without mentioning terrorism directly, the pontiff said creating harmony between religion and public life was " all the more important at a time when some people have come to consider religion as a cause of division rather than a force for unity. (article 12)
