Lawmakers move to curb Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac pay
Summary from United States, from articles in English
The Fed and the comptroller's office began combing the books of the two largest U.S. home loan companies after their declining stock prices caused widespread anxiety in the market, the paper said, quoting Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson. (article 13) The administration on July 13 unveiled a plan to provide unlimited government loans to the two mortgage giants and to purchase stock in the two companies if needed. (article 20) Bush: Troubled financial system is sound WASHINGTON President Bush said Tuesday the nation's troubled financial system is "basically sound" and urged lawmakers to quickly enact legislation to prop up mortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. (article 16) The pair have been hit hard over the past year by mounting losses tied to the downturn in the mortgage market, and the government was forced to step in over the weekend to reassure Wall Street of the companies' solvency. (article 9) The federal bailout plan pulled together over the weekend to bolster Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae and shore up the country's mortgage market still needs congressional approval. (article 18) A senior US Treasury official has welcomed Freddie Mac's efforts to continue raising capital from private investors after a government rescue plan for the troubled mortgage firm and its sister company Fannie Mae was announced. (article 7)
