Iraq's al-Qaida fighters now 'furtive terrorists' :: CHICAGO SUN-TIMES :: World
Summary from United States, from articles in English
BAGHDAD - A roadside bomb killed three American soldiers and an interpreter north of Baghdad, the U.S. military said Wednesday, and Iraqi police reported 14 Shiite gunmen were arrested after fighting south of the capital. (article 1) BAGHDAD A suicide car bomber on Wednesday targeted a military convoy carrying a senior Iraqi commander, killing five civilians, the Iraqi military said. (article 3) The development has been attributed in part to the 2007 U.S. troop surge, a Sunni revolt against al-Qaida in Iraq and government crackdowns against Sunni extremists and Shiite militias. (article 3) Just months ago U.S. foot patrols through the wheat fields nearby would regularly draw fire if the soldiers managed first to elude al-Qaida-planted roadside bombs. (article 6) The shootings come at a delicate time in negotiations between United States and Iraqi officials over the terms of a new security agreement. (article 5) The most contentious sticking point has been an Iraqi demand that American troops no longer be immune from Iraqi criminal laws, an ultimatum that Iraqi officials say has been spurred by unwarranted attacks on civilians. (article 5) Iraqi lawmakers cleared an important hurdle on Saturday by approving the appointment of six Sunni cabinet ministers after a yearlong boycott by the Sunni political bloc. (article 4)
