Gas prices push up retail sales
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
During the month, gas station sales rose 2.4 per cent despite the fact that the price of gasoline ballooned 8.8 per cent, suggesting volume sales declined. (article 6) Wall Street stocks rallied strongly on Tuesday as a sharp drop in oil prices boosted consumer-facing stocks while a plan to turn round Wachovia helped investors shrug off some disappointing earnings reports. (article 3) Most eyes were focused on the financial sector, which staged a remarkable midday volte-face to gain 6.6 per cent as investors skipped over a series of weak earnings results to focus on the positive. (article 3) However, forest product revenues tumbled 21 per cent, while grain revenue dropped nine per cent, sulphur and fertilizer revenue was off five per cent, and automotive revenue slipped two per cent. (article 2) Almost 60 per cent of the military reports serious or critical obstacles to reasonably rapid deployment on any new missions, the MoD's annual report says. (article 10) US equities ended a three-day winning streak on Monday as rising oil prices hit consumer-facing stocks and results from Bank of America failed to whet investor appetite for financial stocks. (article 4) The day began positively, after Bank of America said second-quarter profits dropped 41 per cent to $3.41bn - a better result than analysts expected. (article 4)
