Mugabe, Tsvangirai sign agreement to hold talks -
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
The deal signed on national television was vague, leaving aside nearly every key question about Zimbabwe's future after almost a decade of ruinous decline. (article 4) Monday's ceremony which included a handshake between Mugabe and Tsvangirai, who had not met face-to-face since Tsvangirai founded the opposition Movement for Democratic Change in 1999 generated a rare surge of optimism among Zimbabweans. (article 4) As negotiations between Zimbabwe s feuding political parties loomed on Tuesday, the European Union increased the pressure on President Robert Mugabe by widening sanctions against senior Zimbabwean officials. (article 10) Robert Mugabe's ruling Zanu (PF) party sat down yesterday for face-to-face talks with the bruised and battered Zimbabwean Opposition at a secret location outside Pretoria. (article 2) Such is the sensitivity about the talks that authorities imposed a news blackout on the event but local media quoted well-informed sources as saying that a deal could be reached before the end of a two-week deadline. (article 2) The deal signed Monday provides the groundwork to end political violence and establish some sort of coalition government between President Robert Mugabe and opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai. (article 5) The ink that marks a possible resolution to the crisis that has dogged Zimbabwe for the last eight years may be dry, but the tears of grieving relatives are not. (article 9)
