ABC News: Iraqi Presidential Council Rejects Elections Law
Summary from multiple countries, from articles in English
Lawmakers said the bill would come to another vote within the next week, as the sides struggled to meet a deadline for starting preparations to hold the local elections by late December. (article 6) Iraq s president vetoed legislation on provincial elections on Wednesday, sending it back to lawmakers for revisions as political leaders continued to try to strike a deal that would allow the vote to be held this year as planned. (article 8) BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) Iraq's president has rejected the recently passed provincial elections law, his office said on Wednesday a move that appears to doom what has been touted as all-important legislation for the country. (article 3) The measure had faced strong opposition from Kurdish lawmakers, who boycotted Tuesday's parliamentary session to protest a secret ballot held on a part of the law dealing with the Kirkuk region. (article 3) BAGHDAD - The Iraqi Parliament approved legislation on Tuesday to govern provincial elections, but Kurdish lawmakers boycotted the session, vowing to force the measure to be rewritten, and probably delaying the balloting for months. (article 7) The decision was likely to delay the elections until next year because there would not be sufficient time to make the necessary preparations. (article 4)
