WNBA suspends 10 players and Mahorn for skirmish between Shock and Sparks (Sports, 10 articles)
|
Some of the W.N.B.A.'s biggest stars commanded national attention Tuesday night and into Wednesday - but not in a way their teams or the league wanted. Three players - including the Los Angeles Sparks rookie Candace Parker - and one coach were ejected in the final seconds of a game Tuesday between the Sparks and the Detroit Shock, won by the Sparks, 84-81. WNBA president Donna Orender is expected to announce findings today of the league's review of Tuesday night's altercation between the Detroit Shock and the Los Angeles Sparks at The Palace of Auburn Hills, according to a league source. The WNBA punished so many players for their roles in this week's skirmish that the league is staggering the suspensions by alphabetical order. On Tuesday night, they were involved in a skirmish - another occurrence more frequently connected with the men's game - at, of all places, The Palace of Auburn Hills. A melee is a rarity in women's pro basketball, but players and coaches from both teams engaged in a spirited scuffle with 4.6 seconds left in Tuesday's tilt, won 84-81 by the Sparks.

Would you believe the records are nearly identical now? In fact, when weighing the difficulty quotient of playing in the superior league, the White Sox actually are having a better season than the charmed, beloved, gush-and-goo Cubbies. Grasping for respect as always, clutching the inferiority complex that never ends in a town that never changes, the Sox are dealing with a relentless trail of dissing that, admittedly, doesn't seem fair. On road to oblivion? Sox score five in eighth to win Put it on the message board AL ROUNDUP: Abreu, hot Yankees sink Twins NL ROUNDUP: Hall lifts Brewers over Cards.

It was even more of an excruciating defeat, also decided in the ninth inning, but the Mets won the next two games to complete a somewhat improbable three-month journey to first place in the National League East.

The 53-year-old led the Open going into the final round, but eventually ended in a tie for third behind Padraig Harrington after a final-round slump. Vaughan could have been clear of the field, but a double bogey at the 6th and a triple bogey at the 12th spoiled a scorecard which also contained eight birdies. Norman was one of the stories of the week at last week's Open, but his form at Troon for the senior version of the championship was well short of his showing at Birkdale.

GREEN BAY, Wis. - There were plenty of No. 4 jerseys in the stands and a smattering of jeers for general manager Ted Thompson at Thursday morning's annual meeting of Green Bay Packers shareholders at Lambeau Field. Given the chance to air their grievances directly to the team's leadership, shareholders didn't turn the meeting into one big bring-back-Brett Favre rally. Most of the 9,375 people who attended the meeting pleasantly applauded Thompson and team president and CEO Mark Murphy, then gave a sustained standing ovation to head coach Mike McCarthy.
